What to expect

In Person learning

This class is offered in-person to give the learner the opportunity to practice with the instructors guidance.

Small groups

Classes are usually kept at no more than 20 students to allow for personal attention to everybody’s needs.

Hands on practice

In this class the instructor will demonstrate proper first aid response for several scenarios. Participants will have the opportunity to practice them on stuffed dogs and animal CPR dummies.

comprehensive theory session

The theoretical part of the class is held classroom style.
Questions are not only welcome, but encouraged!

manual and certification

All participants receive a comprehensive first aid manual with everything they learn in the class.
The certificate is valid for 3 years.

Follow up

After the class each student receives a follow up email with helpful information and printables.
I also offer bi-annual virtual Q&A’s via Microsoft Teams.

Curriculum*

Theory

  • Basic care (hair, skin, nails, teeth, anal glands)

  • Basic nutrition, exercise

  • Vaccination

  • Parasites

  • Conditioning for treatment

  • Risk Management (home, environment, toxins)

  • First aider roles & responsibilities

  • Breaks & Fractures

  • Burns

  • Choking, object extraction, swallowed objects

  • CPR

  • Convulsions/seizures

  • Cuts/wounds

  • Drowning & hyper-hydration

  • Ear issues

  • Eye issues

  • Frostbite/hypothermia

  • Heatstroker/hyperthermia

  • Heart problems

  • Impalement/penetration

  • Other animals (livestock injuries, porcupine quills, skunk spray, bites, stings)

  • Lameness

  • Injuries (head, spinal, mouth, tongue, nose, claw, pad)

  • Poison response

  • Shock

  • Swimmer’s tail

  • Digestive issues

  • Traffic accidents

  • Administering medication

  • First aid kit contents & emergency information

Practice

  • Emergency restraint & muzzling

  • Nose to tail survey

  • Mouth sweep for obstruction and choke response

  • Mouth to nose resuscitation & CPR

  • Basic leg bandage

  • Robert Jones bandage for broken legs

  • Ear/head bandage

  • Foot/claw bandage

  • Covering an infected eye

  • Elizabethan collar

  • Stabilizing neck or spine for transport

  • Wrapping swimmer’s tail

All scenarios can be repeated multiple times if desired.
